““Ahimsa...means to not do harm in thought, word, or deed; it is based in the belief that all living beings are connected and that one should always make decisions based on the deepest love for all beings and the planet itself.””
Earlier in July some of our staff attended "Pedagogy of Ahimsa", a professional development workshop. This is the second year we have participated in this event. The three day workshop provided educators an opportunity to learn together about key Gandhian approaches that centered on using peace in education. The workshop was facilitated by Reva Joshee, associate professor emerita from OISE, University of Toronto and author on peace, diversity and policy.
As part of this, Inner City High School opened its doors and toured workshop participants through the school. On the tour, guests met and listened to staff and past students, hearing how their experiences at Inner City had impacted their personal lives and educational paths. The tour was led through the school by Joe Cloutier. At the end of the tour, Roxanne Blood and Joe were presented with khadi shawls made by the CESCI Women Power Group as a thank you and presented by Reva. (Khadi is a homespun cotton and shawls are given to elders and knowledge keepers for sharing their wisdom.)

Thanks to the event sponsors (International Gandhian Institute for Nonviolence and Peace Canada, the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace Alberta and the Alberta Teachers Association) for including us in this important local learning opportunity.
