ATB Place: Teamworks Helps Inner City…

Donation Drive Brings Warm Clothes to Students at Inner City High School

Downtown Edmonton’s ATB Place has a whole community of retail vendors that support local charitable organizations. This fall they launched a donation drive in support of Inner City High School. From August 14 to September 16, the building’s property managers, Triovest Realty Advisors Inc https://www.triovest.com and the ATB Place tenants collected a variety of support items that included ARC Cards for student transportation, nonperishable food, and lots of warm clothes for our students.

Our thanks to Paul Genato, the Tenant Events Coordinator from Triovest for setting this drive up, and, of course, a big thanks to the ATB Place retail tenants for supporting our school community!

Makayla Mantla’s Transformative Nursing Journey

Nursing Student Makayla Shares Her Personal Story of Perseverance, Hope, and Academic Success.

Inner City High students Jaden, Adiren and DaKotah stand with Indigenous nursing student Makayla Mantla (right).

On Thursday, September 19, Inner City High School’s circle was paid a visit by Makayla Mantla, an Indigenous nursing student at the University of Alberta. Makayla shared her personal journey of how she came to attend the University’s nursing program, from a challenging childhood in the Northwest Territories in the Behchoko First Nations community, to achieving her academic successes later in Edmonton. She spoke of how she overcame barriers and found her footing and pathway to academic success while navigating an often lonely post-secondary experience as an Indigenous person on campus. She also talked of feeling constrained by many societal stereotypes that she had internalized, and how she initially often felt out of place at university. Makayla overcame much adversity and achieved success with her postsecondary studies. She is now bringing her positive story to Indigenous youth in the larger community to show that they too can achieve their aspirations — career and otherwise. Makayla’s talk provided our students with insights and relatable real-world examples of how she accomplished her goals. You can learn more about Makayla and her story at the links below:

Many Thanks to the Parkdale Cromdale Community League!

We would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the Parkdale Cromdale Community League and specifically Bronwen, our League contact, for allowing us the use of their Hall’s kitchen. In late August, we received news that our school’s kitchen renovation was not going to meet its original opening target before school opened. Considering this, we had to find alternate remote kitchen space very quickly! The Parkdale Cromdale Community League stepped up and provided a commercial kitchen rental allowing us to maintain our weekday lunch and food service that is offered to 190 youth in our program. Their assistance addressed immediate challenges and we are very thankful for their assistance and support. You can learn more about the Parkdale Cromdale Community League at these links: https://www.parkdalecromdale.org and https://www.facebook.com/PCCLYEG

Inner City Attends 'Pedagogy of Ahimsa Conference'

In honour of Mr. K Joshee’s memory, we wish his daughter and longtime supporter, Reva Joshee, a very happy birthday! Reva has supported Inner City through her work with the Gandhi Foundation. Last month, Joe Cloutier was asked to speak by Reva at the Pedagogy of Ahimsa Conference, as was Social Studies Teacher, Natasha Sakar. The conference supported educators who are seeking to address social justice, environmental issues, and behaviour concerns through engagement with ‘ahimsa’. Ahimsa is translated as nonviolence, or more accurately, it means to not do harm in thought, word, or deed.
