Our Food Program
When students eat better, they learn better.
Food is a cornerstone of our support program and a central part of our work. Many marginalized urban youths don't eat regularly. The Realtors Community Foundation grant helps us to engage and feed the youth. Good food helps them learn. It promotes engagement in Inner City High School and it is the glue that creates and develops a sense of community.
We’ve made a commitment to nutrition and we work hard to provide our students with healthy food choices. Meals and snacks are provided at no charge to students, thanks to the generosity of local sponsors and donors. A full commercial kitchen in the school’s basement creates well-balanced and healthy menus that meet the needs of our community. Our chef creates meals that are rich in produce, whole grains, lean and plant-based proteins. Additionally, healthy cooking methods such as oven roasting, broiling, and grilling are used.
During Covid-19 — our meal preparation and delivery process had to change quite drastically with the closure of our school in March 2020 due to the novel Coronavirus. Instead of food being consumed on site, lunches were set up to be individually delivered to our students learning remotely. As needed, one-to-one informal counselling goes hand in hand with the food delivery during school days. Meal preparation is part of our wraparound programming, providing marginalized urban Indigenous and other youths with services like counselling, transportation, and other daily supports to ensure they can focus on getting a quality education.
