2022 Quarterly Update

January - March 2022

To help you stay on top of the ever-changing school landscape, we’re sending you this Quarterly Update to keep you informed of what’s happening at Inner City High School.

Appreciation & Celebrations

Student Birthdays — we celebrate them with staff and students on our internal website and in our school circles.
New Board Members — we welcomed Lori Choong to our Board in January, 2022, and Jay Gilday to the Board in February, 2022. Our Board meets every month and sets policy, reviews budgeting, and programming.

Colourful student art from Indigenous Studies is displayed on teacher Charis’s desk in the school. The class explores Indigenous worldviews, histories, values and beliefs.

Awareness

The last semester of school starts April 21 and ends June 28, 2022.

Here are a few other things you might want to know…

Fridays — are half days that alternate between morning classes (Blocks 1, 2, 3) and afternoon classes (Blocks 4, 5, 6). On Fridays the school day ends at lunch. In the afternoon, teachers are available for extra homework help and Youth Engagement staff are available to help with crises.
School Foodbank — the school has a small food bank to help with basic supplies. Food pick ups are on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Students can see any Youth Engagement Staff if they food from the school’s food bank.
Youth Outreach — is offered Monday to Thursday after school, until 5:00 pm. Supervised activities like sports, games, videos, recording and beading are provided throughout the school and vary by day and interest.

March Outings

We had a number of excursions into the community in March as Covid restrictions eased in our area. This included a visit to a local ski hill, a trip to see a play in Old Strathcona and a hands-on tour at a St. Albert museum. Click the images below to see a summary of the trips and events students attended last month.

Inner City High School teachers took students to Ayita, a play at Edmonton’s Old Strathcona Bus Barns. The play by Teneil Whiskeyjack is a calling back to one’s spirit and voice. Click the image above to read more.

Inner City High School’s Youth Engagement staff took some students to Snow Valley Ski Hill for an afternoon of downhill skiing and snow boarding.

2022 Drop-in Summer Program

This year our drop-in Summer Program starts on July 12 and ends August 19. The program operates Tuesdays to Fridays from 10:00 AM until 3:30 PM and each day we meet at Inner City High School.

This program is free for youths and caters to those 15-19 years of age. The program engages youth through sports, arts, skills building, and exploration. A light daily lunch is provided. There is no cost for the lunch. If you have questions, contact us.
